How to Level Up Fast in No More Room in Hell 2
Leveling up in No More Room in Hell 2 unlocks more skill slots and access to better perks — but grinding levels inefficiently wastes time. This guide explains how leveling actually works, what the level thresholds are, and how to earn XP as fast as possible.
How Leveling Works in NMRiH 2
Your Responder levels up through Responder XP, earned by completing objectives, extracting successfully, and surviving runs. Your Account XP is separate — it tracks your overall progress across all Responders and unlocks the Expert versions of skills.
Every Responder starts with one dedicated starter skill (based on their pre-outbreak job) plus seven skill slots, for eight skills total. As you gain levels, you pick new skills to fill those slots.
Level Thresholds and Skill Selection
Your Responder gains a new skill choice at these level thresholds:
5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, and 50 — with level 50 being the maximum rank for a Responder.
Each time you hit a threshold, you pick one skill from a pool of three randomly offered unlocked skills (often called the active skill pool). This means you cannot freely choose any skill at any time — you pick from what the game offers you at that level. Level 50 is the cap, so your final build is set once you reach it.
Every skill also has an Expert version that dramatically improves its effect. Expert versions have specific Account Level requirements, which is why Account XP matters even after your Responder hits 50.
How Difficulty Multiplies Your XP
Difficulty in No More Room in Hell 2 is not chosen by the player — it is determined by the average Responder level of your squad at the start of the match. Higher difficulty means more risk, but also significantly more XP:
| Difficulty | Character XP | Account XP | |------------|:---:|:---:| | Classic | 100% | 100% | | Hard | 110% | 140% | | Nightmare | 120% | 200% |
Nightmare requires an average lobby level of 45 to unlock, and it dramatically increases danger — reduced UI, deep fog, more strong enemies and runners, and flashlights that can fully drain. But the 200% Account XP multiplier makes it the fastest path for account progression if you can survive it.
The Fastest Ways to Level Up
Based on how the systems work, these are the highest-value strategies:
- Extract, don't loot forever — a successful extraction is what preserves your Responder and banks your run's XP. Dying at the end of a long run wastes everything. Extract as soon as objectives are complete.
- Run Hard difficulty for Account XP — Hard gives 140% Account XP with only 110% Character XP. If your goal is unlocking Expert skills, Hard is a much better risk-to-reward ratio than Classic.
- Push Nightmare only when you can survive it — Nightmare's 200% Account XP is tempting, but a wipe earns nothing. Only queue Nightmare when your squad reliably clears Hard.
- Focus objectives, not roaming — completing objectives and extracting is what drives XP. Random looting adds risk without XP.
- Pick skills that keep you alive — while leveling, choose survivability skills (stamina, health, healing) so you reach extraction more often. A dead Responder loses all progress.
Character XP vs Account XP: Know the Difference
A common beginner mistake is treating the two pools as one. Character XP levels up your current Responder and unlocks skill picks toward the 50 cap. Account XP is permanent account-wide progress that unlocks Expert skill versions. They grow at different rates under different difficulties, so decide what you are grinding for:
- Grinding a single Responder to 50 → prioritize survival and completion, any difficulty
- Grinding Account XP to unlock Experts → run Hard or Nightmare for the multipliers
Both pools benefit from one thing above all: extracting alive. Level efficiently by playing smart, not by playing more — every failed run is lost XP that a successful extraction would have banked.
